The American

Anton Corbijn

Marketing materials for Dutch filmmaker, Art Director, photographer Anton Corbijn’s new film The American were released last week. Gorgeous. If the trailer is any indication, this will be a full color feature and a big departure visually from his last film Control. The trailer’s wide shots and vivd contrast remind me of his early music video work with Echo and the Bunnymen and R.E.M. Photos from his on-set blog here. Can’t wait.

Commander Mark and the coolest mural ever

I loved watching Secret City as a kid. I wanted my bedroom wall to be a massive space mural just like Commander Mark. The show gave me everything I needed as a kid—imagination, space, robots, drawing, rockets! Every doodle can be traced back to this series as an influence. If I’m bored at a conference table or team meeting I’ll start sketching out some foreshortened circles and extend the space station off notepad. The knock-off death-star uniform was too much. Check out the flip-book opening credits. Classic.

Printing and a Life’s Work

I found this old vocational training video on printmaking. As mobile technologies barrel their way into the universe, watching a film about an offset press really makes me feel ancient. I was on the tail end of working with paste up. Now my iPhone can tune my guitar! Still, I have a fondness for the medium and appreciate the craftsmen that work the powerful and not-so powerful machinery. With enrollment in printmaking at an all-time low, maybe it’s time to rediscover and preserve the artistry and technique behind really cool print work.

Usability in a sustainable culture

Credibility, desirability, and usefulness are integral to the design process regardless of application. Those ideas are “baked in” to what we do. If applied correctly, design solutions are framed with usability practices from the start. With a movement towards sustainability in design, we’re seeing a growing emphasis on specification. As more artists bend towards sustainable design, they’ll push safety, performance and environmental considerations to the forefront. This emerging trend will require Web designers to incorporate more usability practices early and often.
